I remember our weekly trips to the library as an adventure and a respite. Being alone in the stacks, looking at book after book for one that spoke to me, I developed my independence, my intuition, and my sense of self. We’d all split up and go our ways, then meet with our choices on the purple couch by the window over the water. During these times of freedom and safety, Mom would be looking for her own books, and during the week we would have quiet reading time while she made dinner. The ritual has stayed with me all my life…as has my love of reading.
